The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis for carbon and ecological footprints in South Asia: the role of renewable energy

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: The study assessed environmental quality in five South Asian economies and found that increasing renewable energy consumption and output is crucial in reducing carbon and ecological footprints. Results indicate that economic growth is both the cause of and solution to environmental issues in South Asia, and increasing the use of renewable energy contributes to improving environmental quality in the region.

Revisiting the CO2emission-induced EKC hypothesis in South Asia: the role of Export Quality Improvement

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of export quality on the relationship between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in South Asian economies, and validates the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in the context of Bangladesh and India. The findings show a U-shaped association between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in Pakistan, while economic growth is found to decrease carbon dioxide emissions in Sri Lanka and Nepal. Additionally, improving export quality is found to lead to lower levels of carbon dioxide emissions.

Environmental sustainability in Turkey: an environmental Kuznets curve estimation for ecological footprint

Umit Bulut

Summary: This paper investigates the determinants of ecological footprint in Turkey and finds that the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis holds true while the pollution haven hypothesis (PHH) does not apply. Renewable energy consumption is negatively related to ecological footprint, while industrialization does not have an impact on ecological footprint.

Determinants of Carbon Emission in China: How Good is Green Investment?

Zheng-Zheng Li et al.

Summary: The rapid industrialization and modernization of China's economy have worsened climate change caused by carbon emissions. Green investments can reduce carbon emissions, while natural resource extraction, financial sector development, and energy investments tend to increase carbon emissions. Bidirectional causation is observed between carbon emissions and other macroeconomic aggregates considered in the study.

Remittance inflows affect the ecological footprint in BICS countries: do technological innovation and financial development matter?

Bo Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that remittance inflows and financial development have a negative impact on environmental quality, while technological innovations are crucial for reducing ecological footprint. Country-wise analysis shows that technological innovations promote environmental sustainability, and the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is validated across the BICS economies.

The environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis for Bangladesh: the importance of natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and hydropower consumption

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: The study in Bangladesh on the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis suggests that natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas can serve as transitional fuels to mitigate environmental pollution by reducing carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, consumption of coal and refined petroleum oil leads to environmental degradation, highlighting the need for Bangladesh to balance economic expansion and environmental protection.

Environmental performance, biocapacity, carbon & ecological footprint of nations: Drivers, trends and mitigation options

Samuel Asumadu Sarkodie

Summary: The synergy between natural resource consumption and environmental sustainability has varied long-term effects across countries depending on economic structure. However, the transboundary effect of natural resource capital highlights the importance of environmental convergence. Evaluating ecological performance, biocapacity, and carbon footprint can reveal the socio-economic drivers of environmental performance and convergence. Research confirms the presence of environmental convergence among nations, implying that the gap in carbon and ecological footprint between higher-income and lower-income countries will narrow in the long term, underscoring the necessity of global cooperation towards achieving environmental sustainability.

Investigating the EKC hypothesis with renewable energy consumption, human capital, globalization and trade openness for China: Evidence from augmented ARDL approach with a structural break

Ugur Korkut Pata et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of income, human capital, globalization, renewable energy consumption, and trade openness on environmental pollution and ecological footprint in China. The findings revealed a U-shaped quadratic relationship between environmental pollution and income level, with human capital playing a key role in reducing environmental degradation while renewable energy was insufficient to meet environmental requirements. The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis did not hold for China in this study.

Rajesh Sharma et al.

Summary: The study explores the impacts of per capita income, renewable energy, life expectancy, and population density on the ecological footprint in eight developing countries of South and Southeast Asia from 1990 to 2015. The results show that renewable energy has significantly reduced the ecological footprint, while population density has led to increased pollution emissions. Additionally, the association between per capita income and ecological footprint is found to be N-shaped.

Can regional trade integration facilitate renewable energy transition to ensure energy sustainability in South Asia?

Muntasir Murshed

Summary: This paper examines the impacts of regional trade integration on the transition to renewable energy in South Asian economies. The study highlights the importance of promoting intra-regional trade to boost renewable energy consumption and electricity output shares, as well as reveals the non-linear relationships between intra-regional trade shares and renewable energy indicators. The results suggest policy implications for liberalizing trade barriers, reducing foreign direct investment in dirty industries, and accelerating economic growth to facilitate renewable energy transition in South Asia.

Oil price shocks and renewable energy transition: Empirical evidence from net oil-importing South Asian economies

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the nonlinear association between renewable energy consumption and crude oil prices in four South Asian economies, suggesting that a threshold level of crude oil price is reached before further hikes can elevate renewable energy consumption. Nonlinearity is also confirmed in the context of oil prices and renewable energy share, with rising oil prices not enhancing renewable electricity shares. The causality results imply that movements in crude oil prices play a role in shaping energy transition in these economies.
