Acute Response of Human Aortic Endothelial Cells to Loss of Pulsatility as Seen during Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Khanh T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study suggests that even short-term exposure to continuous flow can activate pro-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic signaling in cultured endothelial cells, while pulsatile flow may be beneficial in reducing adverse outcomes following continuous flow cardiopulmonary bypass.

Integrative microphysiological tissue systems of cancer metastasis to the liver

Amanda M. Clark et al.

Summary: The liver is the most commonly involved organ in metastases from various solid tumors, and studying tumor cell behavior in the liver microenvironment has provided unexpected insights into the biology of metastasis. Microphysiological systems linking different organs can help examine the influence of one organ on the function of other tissues, including how the liver environment affects tumor behavior.

Organs-on-chips: into the next decade

Lucie A. Low et al.

Summary: OoCs, also known as microphysiological systems or 'tissue chips', have the potential to be informative at multiple stages of drug discovery and development, providing insights into normal human organ function and disease pathophysiology, as well as predicting the safety and efficacy of investigational drugs in humans. The field of OoCs has seen significant advances in recent years, but there are still challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed to fully realize their potential for translational research.

Microphysiological Systems to Recapitulate the Gut-Kidney Axis

Laura Giordano et al.

Summary: The emergence of microphysiological systems (MPSs) offers a promising approach for in vitro modeling of the gut-kidney axis in chronic kidney disease (CKD) by combining advances in tissue engineering, biofabrication, microfluidics, and biosensors. These systems can simulate the complex bidirectional gut-kidney crosstalk along with contributions from other physiological participants such as the liver and immune system, potentially overcoming limitations of animal models.
