Clinical Outcomes of Drug-resistant Shigellosis Treated With Azithromycin in Bangladesh

Eric R. Houpt et al.

Summary: The study found that infection with Shigella with decreased susceptibility to azithromycin was significantly associated with persistent diarrhea, positive culture results, and higher hospitalization rates. Additionally, poor clinical outcomes were linked to S. sonnei, which is an emerging drug-resistant threat. The study supports the use of susceptibility testing and clinical breakpoints for azithromycin.

Phage Therapy for Limb-threatening Prosthetic Knee Klebsiella pneumoniae Infection: Case Report and In Vitro Characterization of Anti-biofilm Activity

Edison J. Cano et al.

Summary: Phage therapy showed promising results in treating intractable biofilm-associated prosthetic knee infection and led to resolution of local symptoms and signs of infection, recovery of function, and absence of treatment-related adverse effects. Further studies are needed to assess the efficacy and safety of phage therapy for device-associated infections.

Intravesical bacteriophages for treating urinary tract infections in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate: a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial

Lorenz Leitner et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of intravesical bacteriophage therapy in treating UTIs. Findings showed that bacteriophage therapy was non-inferior to standard antibiotic treatment, but not superior to placebo bladder irrigation in terms of efficacy or safety. The safety profile of bacteriophages appears to be favorable, suggesting potential for further large-scale clinical studies on their role in UTI treatment.

Summary: Bacteriophages, or phages, are widely distributed organisms on Earth, with increasing interest in their practical applications for improving food safety. Post-harvest applications of phage biocontrol are currently the most commonly used type of phage mediation, with various commercially available phage preparations facing challenges in their novel yet promising approach.
