Quarantine and testing strategies in contact tracing for SARS-CoV-2: a modelling study

Billy J. Quilty et al.

Summary: The study suggests that testing contacts and reducing quarantine duration can be effective in limiting onward transmission of COVID-19, with potential for substantial reduction in the length of quarantine with a small excess in transmission risk. Adherence to quarantine and self-isolation, along with decreasing test and trace delays, are key factors in improving the effectiveness of these strategies. Further research is needed to evaluate the costs and benefits of implementing such strategies as policy.

Effect of internationally imported cases on internal spread of COVID-19: a mathematical modelling study

Timothy W. Russell et al.

Summary: The study found that in some countries, imported cases may have little impact on local COVID-19 epidemics, while in others, they may contribute a higher proportion to the total incidence. Stringent travel restrictions may help control the epidemic in some countries, but have limited impact on others.

On the relationship between serial interval, infectiousness profile and generation time

Sonja Lehtinen et al.

Summary: The timing of transmission is crucial for understanding the dynamics and control of an epidemic, but estimating the generation times presents challenges. The two commonly used approaches for estimating generation times based on serial intervals result in different generation time distributions with varying variances, which can impact the controllability of an epidemic. By considering these estimates as upper and lower bounds, a pragmatic solution is to use both approaches in downstream analysis.
