Trace element mass fractions in road dust as a function of distance from road

Shaodan Huang et al.

Summary: The proximity to major roadways has a significant impact on the levels of traffic-related elements in road dust, with a notable decrease in mass fractions of these elements with distance from the road. Elements associated with non-tailpipe traffic emissions show a more dramatic decrease, highlighting the substantial contribution of traffic emissions to road dust. The findings suggest the importance of controlling non-tailpipe emissions and indicate that road proximity can be used as a proxy for assessing ambient exposure to traffic-related pollutants.

PM10 and PM2.5 emission factors for non-exhaust particles from road vehicles: Dependence upon vehicle mass and implications for battery electric vehicles

David C. S. Beddows et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between vehicle weight and PM10 and PM2.5 emissions from electric vehicles and traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. The outcome is dependent on the use of regenerative braking in electric vehicles relative to friction braking. Overall, there will be modest changes to the total local emissions of particles from a passenger car built to current emissions standards.
