Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 induces proteoglycan degradation in gouty arthritis model

Le Shi et al.

Summary: Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by the precipitation of monosodium urate crystals in joints and surrounding tissues. The mechanism underlying the development of gouty arthritis from high levels of uric acid remains unclear. This study found that high levels of uric acid can increase the expression of Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3), leading to proteoglycan degradation and subsequent formation of MSU crystals. Additionally, a low temperature environment is an important factor in the development of gout.
