Denitrification by benthic foraminifera and their contribution to N-loss from a fjord environment

Constance Choquel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the impact of denitrifying foraminifera on the nitrogen cycle in a fjord environment, showing that their contribution depends on the availability of oxygen and nitrate. Foraminifera in sediments with high oxygen levels and nitrate concentrations play a significant role in nitrate removal, while those in sediments below hypoxic waters have minimal contribution to benthic nitrate removal.
