The role of maternal diet on offspring gut microbiota development: A review

Hiba Al Rubaye et al.

Summary: Maternal diet plays a crucial role in offspring neurodevelopment, potentially through influencing the development of gut microbiota. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term impact of maternal diet on offspring microbiota development and vulnerability to disease.

The gut microbiota-brain axis in behaviour and brain disorders

Livia H. Morais et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the intricate and potentially important connections between the gut microbiota and the brain, involving bidirectional communication along the gut-brain axis. Emerging evidence suggests that disruptions in microbial communities may be implicated in neurological disorders, with animal models providing valuable insights into the pathways linking the gut and the brain which could have tangible impacts on human health.

Birth by caesarean section and educational achievement in adolescents

Summary: Research findings suggest that there is no significant association between caesarean section and secondary school educational achievement in infants, indicating that altering the infant gut microbiota through caesarean birth does not appear to have a measurable impact on adolescent academic performance.

Batch effects account for the main findings of an in utero human intestinal bacterial colonization study

Marcus C. de Goffau et al.

Summary: The study found a batch effect that led to failure in correctly identifying Micrococcus and falsely assigning it to fetal samples. Furthermore, the particles shown in the micrographs were unlikely to be bacterial cells due to their size, and the microbes cultured from fetal samples differed significantly from those detected by sequencing.

A philosophical perspective on the prenatal in utero microbiome debate

Jens Walter et al.

Summary: The emergence of a new research field focusing on the characterization of microbial communities in the prenatal intrauterine environment of humans and their potential impact on human health has led to significant controversy over the existence of such microbial populations. The debate revolves mainly around technical aspects and difficulties in ensuring sterile sampling and distinguishing legitimate signals from contamination in data. Arguments in favor of a sterile womb are based on scientific principles aligning well with philosophy of science, while research supporting in utero colonization hypothesis lacks explanatory insight, weakening evidence for a prenatal intrauterine microbiome. Reflection on philosophical principles can inform debates on this topic and other disciplines studying low-biomass microbial communities.

Early life exposure to antibiotics and the risk of mood and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents: A population-based cohort study

Mahin Delara et al.

Summary: This study on 221,139 children born in Manitoba, Canada between 1996 and 2012 found that maternal antibiotic use in pregnancy was significantly associated with an increased risk of mood and anxiety disorders (MADs) in children. However, overall antibiotic exposure in the first three years of life and specific postnatal antibiotic exposures showed varying effects on the risk of MADs, with some even having a protective effect. The associations observed may have been confounded by indication and may not have clinical significance.
