Time restricted feeding and mental health: a review of possible mechanisms on affective and cognitive disorders

Walter Currenti et al.

Summary: In recent decades, an increase in life expectancy without a corresponding improvement in quality of life has potentially led to a higher prevalence of affective and cognitive disorders related to aging. Among modifiable factors in mental illness, lifestyle and nutrition play crucial roles, with intermittent fasting emerging as an innovative strategy to prevent and treat mental health disorders. Time restricted feeding, particularly, shows promise in promoting brain health by influencing brain signaling, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity.

Summary: The study found that individuals adherent to time-restricted eating (TRF) were less likely to have cognitive impairment, especially those who had breakfast. This suggests that time-restricted eating may have a positive association with cognitive status and can potentially benefit brain health.
