Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and pregnancy: a systematic review

Summary: This article summarizes the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women. The study found that pregnant women mainly exhibited symptoms such as fever, cough, and muscle aches during the infection. Most pregnant women opted for cesarean delivery, and the fetal and neonatal outcomes were mostly good. However, the current data only includes pregnant women infected in their third trimesters. Further research is needed to determine the potential for intrauterine vertical transmission and long-term outcomes.

Clinical course of novel COVID-19 infection in pregnant women

Summary: Most cases of COVID-19 in pregnant women are mild, but 9% are severe, which may lead to preterm delivery or increased maternal morbidity. Major predictors of severe COVID-19 in pregnant women include decreased levels of erythrocytes and lymphocytes, and increased levels of alanine aminotransferase and CRP. There is no evidence of vertical transmission, but this possibility cannot be excluded.

Vertical transmission of coronavirus disease 2019: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The study found that 3.2% of 936 neonates from mothers with coronavirus disease 2019 tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 viral RNA using nasopharyngeal swab. The rates of infection are similar to those of other pathogens causing congenital infections but further research is needed to determine the rates of vertical transmission in early pregnancy and potential risk for fetal morbidity and mortality.
