A new double side-plate I-beam connection to wall-type concrete-filled steel tubular columns was established and its seismic performance was investigated in this study. The models accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of the proposed joint type under constant axial and cyclic horizontal loads, showing favorable seismic performance of the connections.
The seismic performance of wall-type concrete-filled steel tubular columns (WCFTCs) with I-beam connections have not been numerically or experimentally examined previously. Here, a new double side-plate I-beam connection to a WCFTC was established, and its seismic performance was investigated. Three connection specimens were subjected to cyclic loading, and their finite element models were analysed to assess the effects of the side-plate height and thickness and the axial compression ratio of the columns. The models accurately predict the hysteretic behaviour of the proposed joint type under constant axial and cyclic horizontal loads. The seismic performance of the connections was also favourable.
