Pollutant toxicology with respect to microalgae and cyanobacteria

Tao Lu et al.

Summary: Microalgae and cyanobacteria play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, and toxicological research on them is essential for evaluating aquatic ecotoxicology. However, further improvement is needed in understanding toxic mechanisms and expanding toxicological investigations. The complexity of water pollution, with existing and emerging pollutants, underscores the importance of studying the toxicological effects of pollutants on microalgae and cyanobacteria for better risk assessment.

Photocatalytic aging process of Nano-TiO2 coated polypropylene microplastics: Combining atomic force microscopy and infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) for nanoscale chemical characterization

Hongwei Luo et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared nano-TiO2 coated polypropylene MPs and investigated the nanoscale infrared, thermal, and mechanical properties of MPs before and after photo-aging using a combined AFM-IR technique. The MPs became stiffer after photo-aging, especially in the components surrounding the nano-TiO2 particle, indicating that photocatalytic reaction accelerated the aging process. The findings provide insights into the changes in surface microstructures, physical properties, and chemical compositions of MPs during the aging process.
