Erbium-doped heavy metal oxide glasses with low concentrations of erbium oxide were prepared and extensively studied for their structural and optical properties. The luminescence properties of the glasses were found to improve with increasing Er3+ ion content up to 1.5 mol%, before decreasing due to luminescence quenching. The glasses show promise for potential applications in display devices, optical amplifiers, and green lasers.
Erbium doped heavy metal oxide containing glasses have prominent applications in the field of photonics. In this paper, small concentrations of erbium oxide (Er2O3 = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mol%) mixed bismuth borolead lithium glasses were developed by conventional melt-quenching technique. The extensive structural and optical properties of the glasses were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Optical absorption (OA) and Photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The bonding parameters and the oscillator strengths (Foal and Fexp) were calculated by using absorption spectra. The J-O intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4), and Omega(6)) of the present glasses have shown a trend Omega(2) > Omega(2) > Omega(4) which gives host glass has good quality and covalence nature and also the quality factor was observed to be less than one indicating the transitions of high intensities. The prepared glasses were excited under (480 nm), exhibited green luminescence at (527 nm) (H-2(1/12) -> I-4(15/2)), 547 nm (S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2)) and red luminescence at 656 nm (S-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2)). It is found that the luminescence properties increased with increase in Er3+ ion content up to 1.5 mol% and then decreases due to luminescence quenching. Radiation properties of present network glasses were evaluated and analyzed. The obtained experimental results indicate that the present glasses can be suitable for production of potential display devices, optical amplifiers and green lasers.
