A National Strategy to Diagnose Coronavirus Disease 2019-Associated Invasive Fungal Disease in the Intensive Care Unit

P. Lewis White et al.

Summary: Invasive fungal disease is common in critically ill COVID-19 patients, with 26.7% incidence rate including 14.1% aspergillosis and 12.6% yeast infections. Mortality rates are reduced with antifungal therapy, while corticosteroid use and history of chronic respiratory disease increase the likelihood of aspergillosis. Strategic diagnostic screening and antifungal prophylaxis may enhance the management of COVID-19 patients.

Increased incidence of candidemia in a tertiary care hospital with the COVID-19 pandemic

Marcio Nucci et al.

Summary: The incidence of candidemia in our hospital had been stable for 18 years at 1.3 episodes per 1000 admissions, but since March 2020, there has been an increase in cases. This increase may be attributed to a reduction in admissions and the occurrence of candidemia in COVID-19 patients.

Unexpectedly High Frequency of Enterococcal Bloodstream Infections in Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients Admitted to an Italian ICU: An Observational Study

Cecilia Bonazzetti et al.

Summary: This study assessed the frequency of ICU-acquired bloodstream infections in coronavirus disease 2019 patients, finding a high infection rate mainly caused by gram-positive bacteria, with Enterococcus being the most common. Patients with bloodstream infections had higher organ failure scores upon ICU admission, longer ICU stays, and more frequent need for invasive mechanical ventilation.
