In this study, spherical hydroxyapatite powder was successfully synthesized using the microemulsion method, with poly vinyl alcohol playing a key role in the process. The analysis results indicate that the prepared hydroxyapatite powders have high purity, small crystallite size, and uniform morphology, making them an ideal candidate for biomedical applications.
Hydroxyapatite (Ca-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2)) is one of the most essential inorganic compound which is extensively used as a typical bioactive ceramic showing osteoconduction, i.e. bone-bonding properties. In this current study, a spherical hydroxyapatite powder was synthesized by microemulsion method using poly vinyl alcohol (PVA), dimethyl sulfoxide and hexane. The effect of surfactant concentration on the stability of microemulsion method was studied. The prepared poly vinyl alcohol assisted hydroxyapatite powders were characterized by analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic result shows no impurity peaks. X-ray diffraction results shows the phase pure hydroxyapatite powders with average crystallite size of around 20 nm while the thermogravimetric analysis proves the thermal stability of the powders. The scanning electron microscopy result shows the formation of spherical hydroxyapatite nanoparticles with good uniformity, shape and size control which could assist as a great aspirant for potential biomedical applications.
