Summary: This review examines the contribution of ear photosynthesis to grain filling in C-3 cereals, highlighting the increasing role of ear photosynthesis in modern wheat germplasm and its potential to improve grain yield under resource-limitation. Evidence suggests genetic variability in ear contribution, supporting the existence of C-3 metabolism and indicating the ear as a dehydration avoider organ under drought stress. More research is needed to explore the thermal balance and underlying morphological and physiological traits related to ear productivity.
