Cardiorespiratory hysteresis during incremental high-altitude ascent-descent quantifies the magnitude of ventilatory acclimatization

Jack K. Leacy et al.

Summary: The study assessed the utility of a new metric for quantifying ventilatory acclimatization to high altitude and found that the magnitude of cardiorespiratory hysteresis was significantly related to the development of symptoms of acute mountain sickness. This suggests that hysteresis in steady-state cardiorespiratory variables could provide a simple, non-invasive method of tracking ventilatory acclimatization to high altitude.

No renal dysfunction or salt and water retention in acute mountain sickness at 4,559 m among young resting males after passive ascent

Jerome Biollaz et al.

Summary: In healthy young men resting at high altitude, renal function was minimally affected and acute mountain sickness (AMS) was not associated with salt and water retention under strictly controlled conditions. Therefore, renal dysfunction and fluid retention are not essential factors contributing to the pathophysiology of AMS.
