Long bone histomorphogenesis of the naked mole-rat: Histodiversity and intraspecific variation

German Montoya-Sanhueza et al.

Summary: Naked mole-rats, lacking fur and living in eusocial colonies, exhibit peculiar characteristics such as exceptional bone morphology adapted for digging, high degree of polymorphism, and developmental plasticity. Their bone structures show systematic cortical thickening and high histodiversity, with thin-walled bones in pups and predominant endosteal bone apposition in juveniles. Adults display slow rates of osteogenesis and a cyclical pattern of bone formation, with poorly vascularized tissues and lines of arrested growth. The presence of LAGs suggests a plesiomorphic thermometabolic strategy and the impact of seasonal environmental fluctuations on postnatal osteogenesis in NMRs. The intraspecific variation in bone tissue matrices and vascularization indicates a high degree of developmental plasticity, potentially contributing to the reported polymorphism in this species.
