Thrombotic Complications in Patients with COVID-19: Pathophysiological Mechanisms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Aleksandra Gasecka et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that severe COVID-19 cases are associated with an increased risk of thromboembolism, with one-third of hospitalized patients developing macrovascular complications. Diagnosis of COVID-19-associated coagulopathy can be challenging due to overlapping features with pulmonary embolism, but early recognition of coagulation abnormalities is crucial for guiding treatment and improving patient outcomes. Recommendations for anticoagulant use in hospitalized COVID-19 patients vary and should be made on a case-by-case basis.

The S1 protein of SARS-CoV-2 crosses the blood-brain barrier in mice

Elizabeth M. Rhea et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the SARS-CoV-2 spike 1 protein can cross the mouse blood-brain barrier and be taken up by both the brain and peripheral tissues. Intravenous injection results in higher levels of protein uptake in the brain compared to intranasal administration. Genetic factors and sex have varying effects on the uptake of the spike protein in different tissues.

Summary: The global outbreak of COVID-19 has emphasized the urgent need for effective vaccines and treatments. Advances in biotechnology and genetic engineering have provided progress in understanding the virus, with the development of vaccines being a key focus. Challenges in vaccine development and distribution, as well as the importance of safety and long-term effectiveness, have also been highlighted.
