In this study, a grooved metal ground with slits is used to reduce the scattering cross section of a microstrip patch array antenna. By arranging grooves and slits on the ground, phase differences in scattering between the elements on the ground and in the grooves are achieved on the aperture, resulting in significant reduction in SCS over a broadband range.
A grooved metal ground with slits is utilized to achieve scattering cross section (SCS) reduction of a microstrip patch array antenna in this letter. By arranging the grooves and slits on the ground, 180 degrees scattering phase differences between the elements on the ground and in the grooves are attained on the aperture, and obvious SCS reduction is obtained in a broadband. The proposed low-SCS microstrip patch array antenna is fabricated and measured in an anechoic chamber. Experimental results show that the proposed array antenna can scan up to +/- 60 degrees in the E-plane and +/- 45 degrees in the H-plane within the band of 10-10.6 GHz, and realizes a notable monostatic SCS reduction within the band of 7.8-13 GHz.
