The Position of the Current Warm Period in the Context of the Past 22,000 Years of Summer Climate in China

Summary: Proxy reconstructions show that peak temperatures in the Holocene and the last interglacial period may have exceeded modern warmth, contradicting monotonic warming simulated by climate models. The discrepancy between model results and reconstructions undermines confidence in both, but indicates different climate dynamics between the two periods due to changes in greenhouse gas levels and ice sheet extent. The study suggests that the early Holocene was cooled by larger remnant glacial ice sheets, while rising greenhouse gas levels in the late Holocene warmed the planet. Modern global temperatures may have surpassed those of the past 12,000 years and could approach the warmth of the last interglacial period.
