Controls of subducting slab dip and age on the extensional versus compressional deformation in the overriding plate

Summary: Oceanic plate subduction can cause extensional, compressional, or both types of deformations in overriding plates. The dip and age of subducting slabs are crucial parameters in modulating the extensional versus compressional deformations, with shallow-dipping and/or young slabs favoring compressional tectonics, while steeply dipping and/or old slabs facilitating extensional tectonics. The study validates the parametric analysis through comparison with observed modes of overriding plate deformation in natural subduction zones.
