Ecological correlates of riverine diatom and macroinvertebrate alpha and beta diversity across Arctic Fennoscandia

John E. Brittain et al.

Summary: The Arctic freshwaters provide support for biota that have adapted to the harsh conditions in this region. However, due to climate change, the environmental filters in these freshwater ecosystems are also changing rapidly. This study analyzed the patterns and correlates of alpha and beta diversity in benthic diatom and macroinvertebrate communities across northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland. The results showed wide variation in the replacement and richness difference components of beta diversity in both groups. Climate variables, particularly temperature, were found to be strongly associated with biodiversity patterns in these Arctic rivers. Overall, the study highlights the importance of protecting multiple stream reaches or even entire catchments to conserve total riverine biodiversity, particularly in the face of predicted temperature changes in Arctic areas.
