The role of carbon pricing in the relationship between air freight and environmental resource depletion: a case study of Saudi Arabia

Muhammad Khalid Anser et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the mediation of carbon pricing between air freight and environmental resource depletion in Saudi Arabia. Using time series data from 1970 to 2017, the study finds that in the short term, air freight has negative impacts on natural resources, while in the long term, both positive and negative shocks of air freight deplete the country's environmental resources. The study also reveals an inverted U-shaped relationship between initial economic growth and natural resource depletion, which disappears in the long term. Furthermore, there is a positive relationship between foreign direct investment inflows and natural resource depletion in the short term, supporting the pollution haven hypothesis. However, in the long term, carbon pricing advances the natural resource market and supports the country's environmental sustainability agenda. It is important to develop sustainable air freight policies to address environmental concerns.

Ali Hussein Samadi et al.

Summary: The study examines the co-movements of financial markets in Iran during unstable periods, finding that the oil market has a low co-movement with other markets and can be an alternative for risk-averse investors. Gold price is identified as the leading variable between exchange rate and gold price, influencing investors' portfolio risk. Policymakers can stabilize the foreign exchange market by controlling the gold market, especially during crises and unstable conditions.
