Applying a Regional Transport Modeling Framework to Manage Nitrate Contamination of Groundwater

Lihong Yang et al.

Summary: Regional nitrate contamination in groundwater is a complex challenge due to conflicting interests between protecting water quality and promoting economic development. A modeling framework was used to evaluate nitrate fate and transport in a sandy aquifer in Shandong Province, China, where contamination is driven by intensive fertilization and water exchange. The study provides insights for effective management alternatives to improve groundwater quality and sustain agriculture.
