Impact of extreme wet and dry years on the persistence of Microcystis harmful algal blooms in San Francisco Estuary

P. W. Lehman et al.

Summary: Research found that extreme wet conditions in 2017 did not eliminate the Microcystis bloom, but resulted in a small bloom with low abundance, late initiation, short duration, narrow distribution, and low toxin production. The warm water temperature allowed the bloom to flourish in late summer, despite high streamflow levels. Additionally, the summer of 2017 saw an abundance of non-Microcystis cyanobacteria.
