Bi-directional thermal buckling and resonance frequency characteristics of a GNP-reinforced composite nanostructure

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This article presents the thermal buckling and resonance frequency of a composite cylindrical nanoshell reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets under bi-directional thermal loading. The study assumes that the temperature-dependent material properties of the composite are graded in the thickness direction of the nanoshell and uses a nanomechanical model to approximate the effective material properties of each layer. The analysis is conducted using a modified couple stress parameter and shows that bi-directional thermal buckling occurs when the relative frequency change approaches 30%. The study is novel in considering the effects of bi-directional thermal loading on the properties of the nanoshell and provides useful insights for the design of materials science and micro- and nano-mechanical systems.

A computational framework for propagated waves in a sandwich doubly curved nanocomposite panel

M. S. H. Al-Furjan et al.

Summary: In this study, the characteristics of propagated waves in a sandwich structure with a soft core and multi-hybrid nanocomposite face sheets were investigated. The study found that the sensitivity of the phase velocity of the sandwich panel to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and different face sheet patterns can decrease when the core of the panel is thicker. It was also observed that the effects of fiber angle and core to total thickness ratio on the phase velocity are independent of the wavenumber.

Summary: This study focuses on the buckling temperature and post-buckling analysis of a functionally graded graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) disk surrounded by a nonlinear elastic foundation and covered with a piezoelectric actuator. The results demonstrate the significant impact of various factors such as radius ratio, GPLs parameters, elastic foundation, applied voltage, and piezoelectric thickness on the thermal post-buckling response of the FG-GPLRC disk. Additionally, the presence of the elastic foundation appears to induce a sinusoidal effect on the post-buckling behavior of the disk.

Reliability analysis of a system with two-stage degradation using Wiener processes with piecewise linear drift

Qinglai Dong et al.

Summary: The study focuses on a model of a two-stage degradation process in a dynamic environment, using Wiener processes with piecewise linear drift to describe degradation levels and obtain explicit expressions for system reliability. System failure is triggered by degradation level reaching a defect-based threshold and excessive duration in the defective stage, with a simulation procedure applicable for random failure thresholds. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the proposed reliability assessment method, which can be used for evaluating reliability, predicting residual life, and optimizing maintenance decisions for systems with two-stage degradation in a dynamic environment.

Thermomechanical Soil-Structure Interaction in Single Energy Piles Exhibiting Reversible Interface Behavior

Arash Saeidi Rashk Olia et al.

Summary: Analytical solutions for displacement, strain, and stress in energy piles provide a rational understanding of the thermomechanical load transfer mechanism, with results showing the thermal null point location is dependent on pile geometry and stiffness, shifting upward with an increase in the ratio of head and tip restraints. Furthermore, formation of tension zones in energy piles is likely for various loading scenarios, with the length of the tension zone influenced by pile geometry, soil and pile stiffness ratio, and thermal load magnitude. Additionally, the magnitude of net cooling combined with a constant compressive axial force increases tension zone length and tensile stress magnitude in the pile, while an increase in heating decreases these factors with constant tensile axial force.
