Ammonia removal through combined methane oxidation and nitrification-denitrification and the interactions among functional microorganisms

Summary: The study explored the utilization of methane produced by anaerobic digestion as a carbon source for nitrogenous contaminant removal in wastewater treatment. The results indicated that coupling methane oxidation with nitrate/nitrite denitrification was beneficial in achieving higher ammonia removal rates. Analysis of microbial communities revealed the presence of methanotrophs and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria in the system.

Simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification by a novel isolated Pseudomonas mendocina X49

Summary: Six bacterial strains with simultaneous nitrification-denitrification abilities were isolated from a Beijing sewage treatment plant to improve nitrogen biodegradation efficiency. The strain X49, identified as Pseudomonas mendocina, was found to be the best strain for rapidly degrading high concentrations of inorganic nitrogen. X49 demonstrated efficient removal of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate under aerobic conditions, achieving high degradation rates.
