Detection profile of SARS-CoV-2 using RT-PCR in different types of clinical specimens: A systematic review and meta-analysis

George M. Bwire et al.

Summary: Testing using appropriate specimens and accurate diagnostic tests like qRT-PCR is important for curbing the spread of COVID-19. A systematic review found high detection rates in lower respiratory tract specimens, while no virus was detected in urinogenital specimens. Bronchoalveolar lavage had the highest positive rate followed by rectal swabs and sputum. Nasopharyngeal swabs, commonly used, had a moderate positive rate. Low rates were observed in oropharyngeal swabs and blood samples, while no virus was found in urine samples. Fecal samples showed a positive rate, suggesting potential fecal transmission of SARS-CoV-2.

Evaluation of sample pooling for diagnosis of COVID-19 by real time-PCR: A resource-saving combat strategy

Jaya Garg et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of pooled-sample testing strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic, showing that this approach can save substantial resources and time, reducing the number of tests needed by 76% to 93% in low to moderate prevalence settings with group sizes of 5-10 in a population.

Early transmissibility assessment of the N501Y mutant strains of SARS-CoV-2 in the United Kingdom, October to November 2020

Kathy Leung et al.

Summary: Two new lineages of SARS-CoV-2 with the N501Y mutation in the receptor-binding domain of the spike protein have spread rapidly in the United Kingdom. The 501Y lineage without amino acid deletion Delta 69/Delta 70 was estimated to be 10% more transmissible than the 501N lineage, while the 501Y lineage with amino acid deletion Delta 69/Delta 70 was estimated to be 75% more transmissible than the 501N lineage.

On the information hidden in a classifier distribution

Farrokh Habibzadeh et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the performance indices of a classifier can be found hidden in the distribution of the variable used for classification. By making educated guesses about the variable distribution and decomposing it into probability density functions, one can calculate the performance indices such as sensitivity and specificity. This method has been successfully applied in a case study involving the biomarker prostate-specific antigen for the diagnosis of prostate cancer, showing promising results.
