Sustainable utilization of bauxite residue (Red Mud) as a road material in pavements: A critical review

Performance evaluation of bauxite residue modified asphalt concrete mixes

Summary: This study investigated the performance of bauxite residue (red mud) as a filler in asphalt concrete mixes. The results showed that red mud had higher Marshall stability, rutting resistance, and cracking resistance compared to conventional stone dust filler. This was attributed to the fineness and porosity of red mud, which facilitated uniform filler distribution and higher absorption of asphalt binder. Red mud also displayed satisfactory resistance against moisture permeation and had good active-passive adhesion.
