Large-scale genome sequencing reveals the driving forces of viruses in microalgal evolution

David R. Nelson et al.

Summary: In this study, genomic differences between saltwater and freshwater microalgae were investigated using sequences from 107 microalgae species. It was found that marine species contained more viral families in their genomes, with viral-origin sequences being expressed and coding for a variety of functions. This study comprehensively defines the protein-coding and viral elements in microalgal genomes and proposes a unified adaptive strategy for algal halotolerance.
