The water retention behaviours and pore size distributions of undisturbed and remoulded complete-intense weathering mudstone

Geng Niu et al.

Summary: A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the differences in soil water retention curves (SWRCs) and pore size distributions (PSD) between undisturbed and compacted clays under various suction levels. The study found significant differences in SWRCs only in the transition zone, with undisturbed soil having a unimodal pore structure and compacted soil exhibiting a bimodal pore structure. The data from mercury intrusion porosimetry confirmed these findings and showed that air entry value (AEV) and residual water content can be accurately determined from the PSD curve.

Destructuration of saturated natural loess: From experiments to constitutive modeling

Yukai Fu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the mechanical behavior and evolution of structural damage of saturated natural loess. It is found that the natural soil structure has a significant influence on the properties of the loess. A constitutive model based on experimental observations is proposed, which can predict the compression and shear behavior of both undisturbed and remolded saturated loess.

GPU-accelerated smoothed particle finite element method for large deformation analysis in geomechanics

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study combines strain smoothing technique with GPU parallel computing to improve computational efficiency. New computation formulations are proposed to save memory space, and the method is validated through several benchmark problems. The capability of GPU-accelerated SPFEM in solving large-scale complicated problems is demonstrated by modeling the progressive failure of a long slope.

Experimental investigation on mechanical behavior and particle crushing of calcareous sand retrieved from South China Sea

Yang Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical properties and particle crushing behavior of calcareous sand. Experimental results showed that the amount of particle crushing in calcareous sand increased with higher density and confining stress. The shear response of calcareous sand was well interpreted within the critical state framework based on experimental data and analysis.

A new thermal analysis model with three heat conduction layers in the nuclear waste repository

Xiangyun Zhou et al.

Summary: A mathematical model for three layer media with different thermal conductivities was presented to analyze the three-dimensional heat conduction in the repository. Analytical solutions for temperature distribution in different layers were derived and a parametric study was conducted to assess the effects of geometry dimension and thermal conductivity on thermal performance. The results showed that the thickness of the bentonite pellet layer significantly increased the peak buffer layer temperature due to its low thermal conductivity.

Particle finite element method implementation for large deformation analysis using Abaqus

Wei-Hai Yuan et al.

Summary: The study introduces a simple PFEM approach implemented in Abaqus, which integrates the functionality of Abaqus with PFEM using a single Python script for analyzing large deformation problems. The accuracy and practicality of this method in handling large deformation and soil-structure interaction problems are demonstrated through validation and numerical examples.
