Iron coupling with carbon fiber to stimulate biofilms formation in aerobic biological film systems for improved decentralized wastewater treatment: Performance, mechanisms and implications

Qian Feng et al.

Summary: The study introduced Iron Coupling with Carbon Fiber (ICF) to stimulate biofilms formation for decentralized wastewater treatment, resulting in accelerated and enhanced removal of typical pollutants. The improved surface properties of carbon fibers in ICF contributed significantly to the attachment and growth of biomass, leading to changes in biomass components and alterations in microbial community. Additionally, microbial metabolic functions related to pollutants removal in decentralized wastewater were highly expressed in ICF.

Contribution of various categories of environmental factors to sediment nitrogen-removal in a low C/N ratio river

Haoping Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that sediment N-removal rates in the Chuanfang River increased along the river reach, accompanied by improvements in water quality, sediment fertility, and submerged vegetation. Comprehensive analysis indicated positive effects of water physicochemical properties, sediment characteristics, and submerged vegetation on N-removal rates, but water nutrients were identified as a limiting factor.

Exploring the decentralized treatment of sulfamethoxazole-contained poultry wastewater through vertical-flow multi-soil-layering systems in rural communities

Pei Song et al.

Summary: Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is the most widely distributed sulfonamide antibiotics found in decentralized poultry wastewater in rural communities. The study investigated the treatment of SMX-contained poultry wastewater using multi-soil-layering (MSL) systems, revealing that SMX concentration and influent pH had negative effects on SMX removal, and medical stone could enhance the removal efficiency. A novel stepwise-cluster inference (SCI) model was developed to map the multivariate numeric relationships between variables and SMX removal. The study provides insights into the mechanism of SMX removal in MSL systems through factorial analysis, numeric modeling, and microbiological changes.

A review on performance of constructed wetlands in tropical and cold climate: Insights of mechanism, role of influencing factors, and system modification in low temperature

Mahesh Varma et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands are a promising and sustainable option for wastewater treatment, with various mechanisms for contaminant removal and performance depending on factors such as hydraulic loading rate, pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. Studies have shown that CWs perform differently in different climates, with significant challenges in cold climates which require modifications like greenhouse construction, insulation, and bioaugmentation to enhance performance.

Floating treatment wetlands in domestic wastewater treatment as a decentralized sanitation alternative

Gislayne A. Oliveira et al.

Summary: Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) are efficient and easy to install technologies for the treatment of domestic wastewater, offering advantages such as low cost, nutrient removal and reduced maintenance and energy consumption compared to conventional centralized treatment. Further research is needed on the operation, cost assessment and reuse of FTW in decentralized systems.
