Sequence analysis and specificity of distinct types of menaquinone methyltransferases indicate the widespread potential of methylmenaquinone production in bacteria and archaea

Dennis Wilkens et al.

Summary: Menaquinone plays crucial roles in electron transport chains, microbial taxonomy, and specific methylation reactions. Through gene expression experiments, it was found that certain genes can produce methylated derivatives of endogenous menaquinones. Signature motifs in methyltransferase sequences were identified for discriminating enzymes and predicting methylation status in microbial species.
