Experimental evidence that novel land management interventions inspired by history enhance biodiversity

Robert W. Hawkes et al.

Summary: The text highlights the importance of integrating biodiversity auditing and historical land use in land management to address biodiversity declines within semi-natural habitats. Experimental confirmation is needed to determine if this approach enhances biodiversity conservation compared to routine management. The study in Breckland, Eastern England, showed that incorporating ground disturbance and spatio-temporal variability in management can promote biodiversity conservation outcomes.

Migration strategy, site fidelity and population size of the globally threatened Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius

Paul F. Donald et al.

Summary: Population declines of the critically endangered Sociable Lapwing are probably due to high mortality along its migration routes or on its wintering grounds, both of which are very poorly known. Our long-term study identified two migration flyways, characterized by infrequent long-distance movements and high individual consistency in movement patterns. Stopover areas and wintering sites are located at the interface of dry steppe-like or desert habitats and agriculture, with the species showing high fidelity to wintering sites but low fidelity to breeding sites. The recent emergence of irrigated agriculture in the deserts of Arabia has allowed the species to potentially winter further north and expand into new wintering areas along the coasts of the Arabian Gulf. The global population size is estimated at around 24,000 individuals, but the species remains vulnerable to hunting and small-scale habitat change, particularly along the western flyway.
