iNaturalist as an engaging tool for identifying organisms in outdoor activities

Shem Unger et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of the iNaturalist smartphone application for taxonomic identification in undergraduate biology labs. Results showed that the application worked best for terrestrial organisms with high-quality images, achieving classifications ranging from 92.3% to 97.3% for an introductory biology course. Overall, iNaturalist provided greater taxonomic resolution and engaged students in the biological sciences through its features.
