Differential response of abundant and rare bacterial subcommunities to abiotic and biotic gradients across temperate deserts

Jianming Wang et al.

Summary: The diversity of rare and abundant bacteria in soil is influenced by plant community, climate, soil, and spatial factors, with differences in the impacts of abiotic and biotic factors between the two subcommunities. Rare bacterial richness decreases with temperature, drought, and nutrient limitation, while abundant bacterial richness increases. Plant richness is negatively associated with the abundance of bacteria but positively related to rare bacterial richness. Abiotic and biotic differences have a greater impact on rare bacterial composition than on abundant bacterial composition. Furthermore, spatial patterns of distribution differ notably between abundant and rare bacteria in harsh desert environments.
