Nanocellulose in Emulsions and Heterogeneous Water-Based Polymer Systems: A Review

Stephanie A. Kedzior et al.

Summary: Nanocelluloses, including bacterial nanocellulose, cellulose nanocrystals, and cellulose nanofibrils, are cellulose-based materials with unique properties that can assemble at oil-water interfaces and provide new functionality to emulsion and latex systems. They offer unprecedented control as property modifiers for emulsion and polymer applications, influencing properties such as emulsion type, stability, and stimuli-responsive behavior. Nanocellulose can tune polymer particle properties and be used to produce capsules and polymer nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical, thermal, and adhesive properties.

Cellulose Nanocrystal (CNC)-Latex Nanocomposites: Effect of CNC Hydrophilicity and Charge on Rheological, Mechanical, and Adhesive Properties

Amir Saeid Pakdel et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with different surface properties were incorporated into emulsion-based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) to modify their properties. CNCs with higher hydrophilicity and surface charge showed less association with latex particles and resulted in nanocomposites with lower strain-softening behavior and improved PSA properties.

Development of food-grade Pickering emulsions stabilized by a mixture of cellulose nanofibrils and nanochitin

Shanshan Lv et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the creation of stable Pickering emulsions using cellulose or chitin nanofibrils, providing a solution for preventing droplet coalescence and improving creaming stability. By identifying the optimal nanoparticle concentration and ratio, these nanofibers have the potential to be used as edible particle-based emulsifiers in sustainable plant-based food emulsions.
