Assessing attitudes towards gorilla conservation via employee interviews

Martha M. Robbins

Summary: This study reveals the connection between employment and positive attitudes towards conservation and gorillas, leading to behavior change among staff at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Loango National Park. The perception of gorillas shifted from being seen as dangerous animals to being viewed as kin after employment, with conservation motivation driven not only by economic benefits, but also intrinsic and non-use existence values. Staff in different locations showed varying levels of behavior change related to hunting and bushmeat consumption, likely influenced by regional differences in wildlife practices and conservation history.
