Overhead-Aware Design of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces in Smart Radio Environments

Summary: Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces have emerged as a promising technology for future wireless networks, but a major challenge is the overhead required for channel state information estimation and optimized phase shift reporting. This study introduces an overhead-aware resource allocation framework for wireless networks using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, optimizing system rate and energy efficiency with respect to various parameters while investigating the trade-off between optimized radio resource allocation policies and related overhead.
