Spirituality and religiosity in a palliative medicine population: mixed-methods study

Clare C. O'Callaghan et al.

Summary: This study examined how Australian patients perceive spirituality/religiosity, the associations between diagnosis and spiritual/religious activities, and views on the amount of spiritual support received. The findings showed that patients with Christian affiliation reported higher spirituality scores and for some patients, spirituality and religiosity were very important, while for others, they were not important. After diagnosis, patients prayed and meditated more frequently, and participation in religious activities decreased with frailty. Patients who received spiritual/religious support from external sources and had their spiritual/religious needs met by hospitals reported higher spirituality scores.
