Background: Globally, mushroom constitutes one of the major resources for nutraceuticals, which can be used as an effective weapon against malnutrition and various diseases and disorders. Most countries use this indigenous food as a nutraceutical or its isolated compounds as drug molecules. Such alternative drugs have to date been lacking in quality specifications and standards for proper use and supply. Scope and approach: This paper implies on a comprehensive understanding of mushroom-based nutraceuticals to treat global antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The 21st century marks the juncture of a post-antibiotic era and pre-nanotherapeutics era where only limited options are available for the control of antibiotic-resistant microbial strains. We discuss here the detailed mechanisms of antimicrobial potentials of mushroom. Key findings and conclusion: The major findings suggested in this paper refers to antibiotic resistance. Predictions by the European Union (EU) estimate 10 million deaths a year by 2050 correlated to this effect. Therefore, the motivation to develop potential alternative treatment methods for serious pandemic infections is rising. This, in turn, inspired the development of novel mycopharmaceuticals with minimal side effects based on fungi and mushroom bioprospection. Additionally, this novel field of research discovers food with more nutritional value. Thus, concluding the manuscript with the healing and nutritive benefits of mushroom, which have further contributed a great deal in developing these compounds as alternative pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals in the healthcare system. The giant strides made by analytical and synthetic chemistry and science in general, have immensely contributed to the development of the interdisciplinary science or biomedicine that has achieved phenomenal success in clinical practice.
