The inadequacy of a magnetohydrodynamic approach to the Biermann battery

C. P. Ridgers et al.

Summary: Magnetic fields can be generated in plasmas by the Biermann battery when the electric field has a curl due to electron pressure gradient. However, the commonly employed magnetohydrodynamic model breaks down when the electron distribution function deviates from Maxwellian. This deviation can significantly reduce the electric field produced by the Biermann battery, leading to erroneous predictions for the generated magnetic field.
