Geomagnetic polarity during the early Silurian: The first magnetostratigraphy of the Llandovery

Mark W. Hounslow et al.

Summary: This study presents magnetic polarity records for the Early Silurian Llandovery period, integrating graptolite biostratigraphy and carbon isotope chemostratigraphy to reveal the magnetism of the time. The research identifies normal-reverse polarity chron couplets in the Llandovery, with an average reversal frequency of approximately 3.0 Myr(-1) in the Early Silurian, similar to that of the late Cenozoic, indicating the potential utility of magnetostratigraphy for high-resolution correlation and dating in this period.
