A sensitive device was developed for the electroanalytical determination of bisphenol A (BPA) through modification of a carbon paste electrode (CPE) with orthorhombic molybdenum trioxide (alpha-MoO3). The alpha-MoO3 orthorhombic structure was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry and the plate-like morphology in micrometric dimensions by scanning electron microscopy. The alpha-MoO3/CPE showed a better charge transfer between electrode-solution interface and a higher current intensity for the oxidation of BPA when compared to the CPE. The calibration plot of BPA by square wave voltammetry was linear in the range of 0.03 to 1.6 mu mol L-1 with limits of detection and quantification of 0.015 and 0.051 mu mol L-1, respectively. Lastly, the alpha-MoO3/CPE was effectively applied to monitoring BPA leaching from commercial plastic samples to water. The results were compared with those provided by UV-vis spectrometry.
