The study demonstrates a one-step, rapid and cost-effective method to prepare nanohydroxyapatite from fish bones and mussel shells using microwave-assisted technique. The samples contained high quality and thermally stable nanocrystals with average particle sizes of 265 nm and 108 nm, respectively.
The present study reveals one-step, rapid and cost-effective preparation of nanohydroxyapatite (nHAp) from fish bones and mussel shells via microwave-assisted method. Fish bones and mussel shells facilitate the calcium (Ca) that reacts with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to form Ca-EDTA. Microwave irradiation of Ca-EDTA and disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4) mixture at 750 W for 10 min resulted in HAp or Ca-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(2). Samples were analyzed using diffraction, spectroscopic, microscopic and thermal techniques. High quality and thermally stable nanocrystals were present in fish bones and mussel shells HAp samples, with average particle size of 265 nm and 108 nm respectively. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V.
