Effects of Grain Boundary Geometry and Boron Addition on the Local Mechanical Behavior of Interstitial-Free (IF) Steels

Kazuki Endoh et al.

Summary: Nanoindentation measurements were conducted on various grain boundaries to investigate the effects of neighboring grain geometry and boron addition on plasticity resistance in interstitial free steels. The parameter alpha, defined as the slope of a P/h - h curve, was used to estimate resistance against plastic deformation. The value of alpha remained almost constant with the geometric compatibility factor of the grain boundaries, indicating that neighboring grain geometry does not affect plasticity resistance at grain boundaries. However, the addition of boron led to an increase in alpha due to boron and titanium segregation, suggesting that elemental segregation to grain boundaries enhances resistance to plastic deformation in the vicinity of these boundaries.
