The following halogenides of beta-alanine: beta-Ala center dot HF (I), beta-Ala center dot HCl (II), beta-Ala center dot HBr (III), beta-Ala center dot HI (IV), 2 beta-Ala center dot HBr (V) and 2 beta-Ala center dot HI (VI) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and by vibrational spectroscopy. The salts (I-III) are simple salts A(+)X(-) but are not isostructural. The salt (IV) of the type of (A(+)center dot center dot center dot A(+))(X-)(2) comprises a centrosymmetric dimeric dication. The isotypic salts (V), (VI) belong to the type (A(+)center dot center dot center dot A)X- with centrosymmetric dimeric cations and strong hydrogen bonds. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
