The study found that the hybrid additives of 8-aminoquinoline and zinc oxide can effectively inhibit the self-corrosion of commercial AA5052 Al alloy anode, which significantly improves the electrochemical activity of Al anode and increases the anodic utilization rate.
The mitigation of self-corrosion of commercial AA5052 Al alloy anode for alkaline Al-air batteries has been investigated using hydrogen evolution test and electrochemical measurement. The hybrid additives of 8-aminoquinoline (8-AQ) and zinc oxide (ZnO) exhibit excellent synergistic inhibition effect. Also, the electrochemical activity of Al anode is also substantially improved. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) are served for analyzing the surface topography of Al anode before and after discharge. Fourier transform infrared spectra are applied to reveal the synergistic mechanism of hybrid additives. The retardation of the hydrogen evolution by the hybrid additives is due to the formation of a compound protective film on the Al surface. The film can effectively enhance the discharge performance of Al anode and keep anodic utilization as high as 90.8%. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
