The study found that the addition of MgO in the sintering of hematite-ilmenite ores resulted in increased formation of MgO·Fe2O3 and Mg-rich SFCA, as well as higher retention of Ti in the Fe-rich phase. However, the formation of CaO·TiO2·SiO2 phase decreased with increasing MgO addition.
The effect of MgO on phase development in a hematite-ilmenite ore sinter was investigated employing a vertical tube furnace by raising the temperature at 30 KJmin to 1 553 K. The phases developed after sintering were identified in terms of XRD and EDS analyses. The distribution of metallic elements after sintering were figured out through EPMA mappings. The results showed that the formation of MgO center dot Fe2O3(s) and Mg-rich SFCA increased in the sinter blend, and that more Ti was retained in the Fe-rich phase with increasing MgO. It is believed that the formation of CaO center dot TiO2 center dot SiO2 phase decreased with increasing the addition of MgO.
